You know us by our red and black MOM logo, but you might not know that MOM has added another color to its brand - GREEN. We launched our Green Print sustainability program to combat the carbon footprint the business community has on the environment. Offices use paper, produce waste and expend energy. Offices use paper, produce waste, and expend energy. At our MOM offices, we have paper recycling bins at each desk and in our demo rooms, along with plastic recycling bins in all of our lunch rooms. Our MOM Distribution Center in Cincinnati was one of the first departments of the company to lead the way with our efforts to go green. The Distribution Center reuses and recycles approximately 75,000 pounds of cardboard annually. They also recycle and repurpose between 150,000 and 200,000 pounds of machine parts, saving that metal and plastic from being dumped into area landfills. MOM is a leader of office technology, so it only made sense for us to develop our Green Print program that not only reduces our company’s carbon footprint, but that also makes strides in reducing that of our clients.
For our exceptional progress with Green Print, MOM has been recognized in our industry as a leader in the green revolution. In March of 2010, Ricoh came to our office and shot a video about how MOM provides the Total Green Office Solution to our clients and embodies that at our facilities. To view this video, please visit our YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/modernofficemom. Ricoh and Lanier also highlighted our client education efforts for an event that we hosted at the Longaberger Alumni House at The Ohio State University. During this event, we hosted more than 25 local Columbus companies and educated them on how to “green” their office with the help of representatives from Ricoh and Lanier (Read Lanier LINK article). MOM has also been acknowledged in the Managed Print Services (MPS) industry by Photizo Group in their MPS Insight Journal publication in 2010. Photizo had a full two page spread on how MOM’s MPS program is on the cutting edge of being green in our industry (Read MPS Insight Journal – Does Green Really Matter?).
All of our national recognition places us at the top of our industry for green practices, but what is really important to us is passing this knowledge along to our clients. We host multiple events a year that promote how to become a more sustainable company. During these events, we bring in industry experts from Ricoh, Lanier, and Canon to support our claims and reinforce that the equipment purchased or leased from MOM is Energy-Star certified. At our larger clients, we have also implemented custom toner recycling programs to ensure that printer and toner cartridges do not end up in area landfills. Miami University in Oxford, Ohio has a custom recycling box with their University’s print program, bigPRINT, on the labels. MOM has also set up a recycling program for the fax cartridges at The Ohio State University Medical Center. On average, 50 cartridges have been recycled every month since January of 2009, so approximately 1,200 cartridges over the span of the program.
Green Technology and Solutions for Clients
We team up with the top technology partners in the business. These brands lead the industry in not only innovative, energy star-rated office solutions; they also receive accolades for their environmental efforts.
Today’s office equipment is more energy efficient than ever. Machines can go from energy-saving mode to full operation in less than 15 seconds. Even multifunction devices can cost as little as $20 a year in utility costs. MOM’s software solutions also streamline business operations and go a long way to increasing your bottom line.
Below are examples of how efficient the equipment is and tips to get the most savings out of what we have to offer:
-
A B/W MFP uses less energy in a typical workweek than a 100 watt light bulb
-
Midrange COLOR MFPs actually cost as little as $20 a year in utility costs
-
MFPs use about the same amount of energy per week as the leading color desktop printers, even with copy, scan, print and faxing capabilities all in one
-
You can manually launch MFPs into low power mode by pressing the Energy Saving Mode button on your control pad
-
Quick Start Up technology allows machines to launch from Energy Saving Mode to full operations in 10-15 seconds or less
-
A fleet of 100 35ppm machines can save 11.2 tons of CO2 per year by utilizing Energy Savings Mode
-
Equipment older than four years likely uses more energy than the latest models. Upgrading a 45ppm machine with the latest model can save $313 in utility over five years
-
Consolidating several stand-alone printers into a single MFP workgroups can save hundreds of dollars on an annual utility bill, while reducing carbon emissions
-
Imagine: If you have 6 B/W laser printers and consolidate them into 1 color MFP you can cut your energy consumption by 78% and save about $98 a year in utility costs. That has a direct environmental impact with reduced carbon emissions
Client Copier Toner Recycling Program
Businesses have been recycling printer cartridges for years. Recycling printer cartridges is painless and just makes sense. Offices seeking to enter into a similar recycling program with copier toner containers often hit roadblocks…until now. MOM has partnered with Lanier to give businesses the opportunity to recycle their copier containers.
Program details include:
-
Clients purchase Lanier recycling boxes – set of two for $40, plus shipping
-
Boxes include pre-addressed, prepaid UPS return mailing labels

MOM EXPANDS GREEN PRINT, REDUCES CARBON FOOTPRINT
In addition to taking steps to help clients reduce their carbon footprints, we evaluated our entire business to find ways to implement sustainable programs throughout our company. MOM analyzed every facet of our operation and executed programs to reduce waste and conserve energy. Some of the ways we’re expanding our Green Print include:
-
Implementing a cardboard recycling program, saving 75,000 lbs. of cardboard annually from going into landfills
-
Recycling 200,000 lbs. of scrap metal and plastic annually from used copiers and printers
-
On January 1, 2011, MOM switched email systems to corporate Google Mail. By doing this we reduced the amount of servers we have in-house and will result in less energy consumption at our Corporate Headquarters in Cincinnati
-
Supplying MOM employees with water bottles in an effort to eliminate office use of plastic water bottles that potentially contain harmful chemicals; MOM water bottles are Bisphenol-A (BPA)-free
-
Providing Pure Oxygenated Drinking Water Systems to create a healthier alternative to the typical five-gallon jugs that may contain harmful chemicals
-
Educating employees on the importance of unplugging electrical device chargers, such as cell phones and iPods, to stop the wasted pull of energy (reported to be nearly 50 percent of the energy a device pulls while actively charging)
-
Advising all employees to shut down their computers at the end of the workday
-
Using fluorescent light bulbs, which typically last longer and use less energy than traditional light bulbs
